ROBOTICS PROMOTES SOCIAL MANUFACTURE IN ASIA

Regardless of the industry involved, manufacturing companies in Asia are facing the challenge of paying fair wages while still remaining competitive. Robotics is an essential key for achieving this goal.

We have been breaking new ground in our approach to this since late 2012. To begin with, our manufacturie  was developed so as to comply with all legal requirements (which is not the norm in China) and to guarantee decent wages for the employees in our factory. We are guided by the concept of “living wage” – which basically refers to an income that allows employees to make a decent living already within a 40 hours work week without having to work additional overtime. According to ILO (International labour organisation) up to 60 hours weekly working time in total are acceptable. However in China companies across all industries greatly exceed this number of hours, some even with exploitive wages and inhumane working conditions.

GSN is proud to be a first-mover with its concept of social manufacture, especially because better working conditions generate higher labour costs at first. However, these higher costs are more than compensated for by taking two different approaches, which ultimately increase and sustain our overall competitiveness.

Firstly, a substantial part of the company's dividend is made available for reinvestment into social innovations like the living wage. Secondly, the flexible implementation of automated machines into the manufacturing process leads to an ever increasing number of machines taking over specific work sequences from the human operator. Thus robotics helps to reduce the performance pressure on manufacturing staff.

The general approach so far, however, has been to build a fully automatic machine for each product. Given the rapid developments in robotics, it will soon be possible to adapt just a few robots that can be programmed in different ways to reliably perform several work sequences up to a moderate level of complexity, regardless of the product concerned.

As a result, more and more manual operations will be performed by programmed automatic machines. For instance, GSN uses adaptive automatic machines for the latest generation of connectors with a 1.00 mm pitch (between cable and PCB). Adapting them to different numbers of poles is so cost-efficient that they are economical to use even in medium quantities. In our view, the combination of a high degree of automation and decent wages for our employees in China is the strategy of choice in order to meet the financial and social challenges of the future in the most inspiring way.

I am thrilled to share some significant news with you all! As of April 1, 2024, I have been taking on my new role as Chief Development Officer of the GSN Group of Companies. In his speech Frank talked about the reasoning behind this. Opening an own production facility in China was originally a dream of his father, Lutz Püschel, who did not dare to realize it back in the day. Frank explained that his dream started to build on his father's and went beyond simply setting up a production facility. In his book "Radical Change", Frank developed a solution, TRI-MONY, that offers a way to establish more harmony in the world, and is used at GSN to enable his dream. "It is my dream for GSN that all of you are happy. That all of you are satisfied with the work, the payment, the see your child program and all other benefits that GSN is offering. It is my dream that we will grow further, so more and more people can join GSN. That more and more people can become members of the GSN family." Frank emphasized that although this goal is his dream, it can only be achieved because it is, above all, the employees of GSN who make it possible. "You are the people who make these dreams come true". To emphasize this point, Frank pointed out the immense transformation of GSN in recent years and, although GSN, like everyone else in the world, has suffered from Covid, GSN has emerged from this crisis stronger and growing faster than ever before, due to the employees at GSN working diligently and hard. In conclusion, GSN is growing and is happy to welcome this new location and its employees as part of the GSN family!

In 2023, we are confronted with many global risks and opportunities. INFLATION China is rather independent from price changes at international markets for raw materials. As China is our major production location, GSN‘s risk towards inflation is lower than in the Western part of the world. To further mitigate the risk of rising costs, we will move our level of automation even closer to 100% in 2023. ENERGY COSTS GSN‘s costs for energy in China have remained stable during 2021 and 2022. We expect the same for 2023 and rate this risk as low. POLITICAL RISKS Sadly, the world is not a fully peaceful place. We strongly hope that all conflicts between countries will be handled in a peaceful manner only. Our value chain is ready to adapt to changes to the current status quo within a few months time. ECO-SOCIAL IMPACT The human species causes a large eco-social damage foot-print that goes far beyond climate relevant damages. At GSN, we strive for innovation to mitigate GSN‘s overall eco-social footprint. We regard this as a positive challenge and we will enhance our status as eco-social best-in-class role model in the electronics industry. GLOBAL ELECTRONIFICATION More and more electronics is being used in almost all products globally. GSN will continue to develop new technological solutions to make the world a better place.
